About the Artist

Barbara Armstrong is a local artist specializing in oval boxes. In keeping with Shaker traditions dating back hundreds of years, we craft these boxes and pin cushion bases with thin bands of cherry or maple which we steam and bend. Copper nails secure the “swallow tails,” the boxes are sanded smooth and finished with several coats of Danish oil and beeswax.  Barbara received her training in 2008 at the John C. Campbell Folk Art School in Brasstown, North Carolina. Barbara also creates gourd art and masks.
